Spend 20 minutes reading to your child. “Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to language development. Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, a potent predictor of reading success." Talk about what you've read: ask them to make predictions, what the story reminded them of, any open-ended question is great. https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/why-reading-aloud-to-kids-helps-them-thrive
- Check out Mrs. Peachey’s blog section on summer reading here: Just Peachey at Penfield
Make a plan or goal of how many books you’d like to read this summer. How can you track your progress? - Listen to the story “How to Teach a Slug to Read”. What connections do you have to this story? What is a good tip for teaching someone how to read?
- Learn about space! Download the Space Rangers Toolkit and spend 5 days learning about stars & constellations, the solar system, the moon and Apollo 11, Mars: the red planet, and space exploration! Visit this website for more information or to only download the section(s) you are most interested in.
- Visit the Explore section on Epic Books. When you see a book you think you’d like to read, click the heart to add it to your library. Now when you have time to read, you will have a whole library of books you are interested in all in one place!
- Put together a small collection of your favourite toys. Use them to tell an oral story. You could retell a story you know or make up your own! Give the characters unique voices and have fun! Perform the story for someone in your house. Ask them if they have any questions to help you think about ways to add to your story.
